Advancing our understanding of ocean biogeochemistry, biology, and ecosystems relies on the ability to make observations both in the ocean and at the critical boundaries between the ocean and other earth systems at relevant spatial and temporal scales. After decades of advancement in ocean observing technologies, one of the key remaining challenges is how to cost-effectively make measurements at the increased resolution necessary for illuminating complex system processes and rapidly evolving changes. In recent years, biogeochemical in situ sensors have been emerging that are threefold or more lower in cost than established technologies; the cost reduction for many biological in situ sensors has also been significant, although the absolute costs are still...

Calibration of a capacitance probe in a Paleudult Scientia Agricola
Silva,Cláudio Ricardo da; Andrade Júnior,Aderson Soares de; Alves Júnior,José; Souza,Antonio Barros de; Melo,Francisco de Brito; Coelho Filho,Maurício Antonio.
The use of capacitance sensors is one of the methods used to quantitatively measure soil water contents (theta, m³ m-3). Sensors provide readings at desired depths and time intervals. A capacitance probe (Diviner 2000) was calibrated for a Rhodic Paleudult from the Piaui State, Brazil. Six access tubes were installed in a 5 × 2 m grid arrangement. Three moisture levels (saturated, moist and dry) were used in two replications. Probe readings and soil samplings to determine theta were made at 0.1 m depth intervals down to a depth of 1.0 m. A power calibration equation was developed for each depth as well as for the entire soil profile (Root Mean Square Error = 0.014, R² = 0.93) for a theta range of 0.068 to 0.264 m³m-3. A separate calibration for each depth...

Detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds in artificial sea-water using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) ArchiMer
Peron, Olivier; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Lehaitre, Michel; Crassous, Philippe; Compere, Chantal.
This paper reports an accurate synthesis of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates, based on gold colloidal monolayer, suitable for in situ environmental analysis. Quartz substrates were functionalized by silanization with (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPMS) or (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and they subsequently reacted with colloidal suspension of gold metal nanoparticles: respectively, the functional groups SH and NH2 bound gold nanoparticles. Gold nanoparticles were prepared by the chemical reduction of HAuCl4 using sodium tricitrate and immobilized onto silanized quartz substrates. Active substrate surface morphology was characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements and gold nanoparticles...

Méthodes électrochimiques pour l'analyse in situ de composés bioactifs en milieu océanique ArchiMer
Lacombe, Marielle.
The implementation of in situ autonomous observatories for biogeochemicalstudies in the open ocean water column and in deep-sea chemosynthetic environments is crucial for the understanding of these ecosystems. We focussed this study on silicate and sulphide, two key compounds of the marine food chain. A voltammetric method for sulphide measurements on silver electrode is presented, and a new method for quantitative determination based on the solubility difference between silver chloride and silver sulphide is proposed. A completely reagentless method for silicate measurements is developed using molybdate and protons produced during molybdenum oxidation. These analyticaldevelopments allowed us to validate a submersible potentiostat, first step toward a new...

Prediction of faecal contamination in shellfish production areas: Interest and limits of the salinity parameter ArchiMer
Le Saux, Jean-claude; Le Vaillant, Gael; Guillermou, Ghislain; Vilbas, Jean-valere; Deter, Julie; Delyon, Bernard; Le Guyader, Soizick; Pommepuy, Monique.
Estuarine areas are sensitive to rapid and punctual contamination linked to heavy rainfall inducing rapid fresh water input. Thus, the increase of seawater contamination may be linked to a salinity decrease. The objective of this study was to measure salinity variation as a proxy to evaluate the risk of faecal contamination. Salinity sensors were set up on shellfish beds in Daoulas estuary (Bay of Brest) and monitored every 10 min over a four year period. Precipitation and river flows were also recorded. Moreover E. coli concentrations and salinity were measured in the estuarine surface water during different hydrodynamic conditions and seasons. The results indicated a significant relationship between E. coli concentration and salinity in the estuary....

Sensing Polymer/Paracetamol Interaction with an Independent Component Analysis-Based SERS-MIP Nanosensor ArchiMer
Decorbie, N.; Tijunelyte, I.; Gam-derouich, S.; Solard, J.; Lamouri, A.; Decorse, P.; Felidj, N.; Gauchotte-lindsay, C.; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Mangeney, C.; Lidgi-guigui, N..
In this article, we propose a new strategy to build a sensor for easy handling and rapid analysis on-site. Our sensor is based on the combination of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). SERS provides a strong sensitivity for the detection of trace molecules while MIPs offer a highly selective and specific recognition platform. The research presented here focuses on the detection of the interaction between a robust ultra-thin layer of MIPs and of paracetamol, the targeted molecule. This drug is an environmental emerging pollutant, i.e., a molecule whose presence and significance have not yet been elucidated, which gives rise to health and environmental concerns. The results are a combined analysis of the SERS...
